March 2006

As March comes to a stormy end, it has brought us a few waders , 2 Dunlin stuck around for a few days at the beginning of the month and caused some interest, different numbers of Golden Plover were about all month, the largest being around the 220 mark the average about 70. Lapwing have been displaying in the east field, with up to 50 in mid March. Also a good movement of Curlew with up to 13 in the west pool on the 29th. A pair of Oystercatcher have been visiting the west pool over the last week showing some signs of courtship.

Wildfowl numbers have been quite good with 6/8 Teal being seen most days, 3 Male Pochard on the 7 th March { a good record for Ringstone} .Up to 5 Pairs of Mallards. All fighting and mating . Goosander numbers at start of the month were up to 11, coming in to roost in the evenings. A pair of Goldeneye hung around for a few days at the end of March as did a pair of Gt Crested Grebes and a Moorhen was spotted at the inflow on the 18th.

The Feeding station is still attracting all the usual. A Stonechat came for a look during the coldspell, and now 9 Goldfinches are coming down to the Nyger seed. As the month drew to an end more Meadow Pipits have been seen and heard as well as Skylarks, and on the last day 1 Male Wheatear turned up. Roll on April.
The Hide is now well under construction.
